Domke Insert with Timbuk2 messenger bag

I needed a camera insert that would fit inside my medium Timbuk2 messenger bag. This insert fits inside the bag well, leaving a little extra space on the sides to access Timbuk2 interior accessory pockets, as well as space to fit a composition notebook.

The padding is about half and inch thick and appears sufficient for everyday bumps. Inside the insert, I can fit a Nikon D700 with a 50mm prime lens. And if I angle it correctly, a 70-300mm zoom lens. One of the pockets I have to collapse to fit camera and lens, leaving room for a cable or something small. the other two pockets I can fit a zoom lens and an SB-600 flash. This is not a good insert for using anything bigger than a medium zoom lens.

One major problem I found is the lack of padding on the bottom. To me this makes no sense. The worst risk of shock is from the bottom of a bag. Because I climb like a monkey and drop gear occasionally, I cut a piece of a thick exercise mat to the size of the bottom of my timbuk2 bag, and used that as protection.

Camera Insert

I am very pleased with the camera insert. I like to change bags, depending on what type of shooting I am doing. With the insert, I can put it in any bag and keep my camera safe where ever I go. The velcro walls let me re-partition the insert to fit my camera and equipment. The insert also allows me to use a bag that does not ‘identify’ me as a photographer, therefore remaining part of the crowd when I am shooting.

Very pleased – would recommend to a friend or college.

Not quite as pictured…

While this insert is well made and works wonderfully, you need to know that the image pictured here on Amazon is not exactly what it looks like. The shape and size and color are all right, but the little padded adjustable insert/dividers are different than shown. There is 1 large “T” shaped divider, and 2 regular straight dividers. Still love the insert, but was a little let down that it wasn’t as pictured.
