Not LCDVF Viewfinder
By F. Del Villar
I bought this viewfinder a few days ago, when I received I found out that it was an imitation of the LCDVF brand viewfinder. The box says Meike and sells for half the price in other places.
The seller is tricking potential buyers by putting the name LCDVF in the description and is hiding the real brand (Meike) by placing their company name in manufacturer field.

I thought it was the LCDVF but when I opened the package, I found it was a cheap imitation.

-The magnet does not keep the viewer on. it simply falls off when attached
-the magnetic frame you put on the LCD crops the view on my 5D mkii
-The viewfinder causes pin-cushioning and make the image a pink tint.

Cheap plastic and 100% dissatisfaction.

They should be pulled off of Amazon for making and selling such a forgery.

He needs to list this as the fake version and put he makes as meike.

997 of 1020 people found the following review helpful.
A nice camera – fits right in between the T2i and 7D
By C. Vincent
Simply put: Chances are good that your expectations and what you are looking for will determine whether or not you like this camera.

The newest addition to Canon’s XXD line might initially seem like a minor downgrade to the previous XXD cameras, but several new capabilities actually help make this a nice, well-featured camera that will appeal to many people who don’t get caught up in whether or not this is a better camera than it’s predecessor. Canon certainly made this camera for the price point and was careful to add just enough features to make it desirable over the T2i, but not desirable enough to compete with the 7D. In some respects though, it seems like a beefed-up version of the Rebel line (a “Super-Rebel”) instead of a new addition to the XXD line.

As someone who has now had the opportunity to use all three of Canon’s mid-range lineup (the T2i, 60D, and 7D), I have to say that I really like the feel of the 60D. Even though it no longer has the magnesium alloy body, it feels solid. In no way does it feel cheap. I have fairly small hands and the 60D feels like it was made for me. It’s significantly lighter than the 7D and feels like it would be much more friendly on long hikes. The 7D feels much more robust; however, the 60D feels much more “comfy”. It is definitely bigger in size than the T2i, but the angles and design of the camera have a nicely updated feel to them that makes it seem like you are getting a much more substantial camera. The articulating screen was also done very well. My initial worries that the screen would feel cheap and break easily were immediately relieved after using it. The hinges are very solid and feel almost stiff to the point where you are comfortable with it staying right where you want it. It also is very flush with the rest of the body and offers little space in between.

Aside from the feel, the camera takes beautiful pictures. Quality-wise, there is very little difference between the pictures that come out of the T2i, 60D, and 7D. ISO performance is very similar and therefore can not be much of a deciding factor between the models. Most of the decision factors really will focus on which user interface and camera system best appeals to your type and level of photography. Each of Canon’s mid-range models has it’s own pros and cons, and while there are MANY differences between each camera, these are the main points I considered when deciding between cameras to purchase (hopefully it helps those going through the same decision I did):

60D vs. 50D:

(+) New Sensor – the same 18MP sensor that the 7D and T2i have, better ISO coverage/performance
(+) 63 zone dual-layer metering
(+) Better viewfinder – 96% coverage vs 95% coverage
(+) Video
(+) Articulating screen
(+) Wireless flash control
(+) Horizontal electronic level
(+) In camera processing (new RAW processing feature and in camera filter effects)
(+) Control over max auto-ISO
(+) Eye-Fi wifi file transfer functions

(-) The magnesium alloy body of the 50D has been replaced with a polycarbonate body
(-) 6.3 fps shooting is down to 5.3 fps
(-) No lens microadjustment in 60D

(+/-) Compact flash card slot has been changed to a SD card slot
(+/-) Joystick replaced by directional pad

60D vs. T2i

(+) 9 all cross-type AF points vs T2i’s 9 points w/ 1 center cross-type
(+) 96%, .95 magnification pentaprism viewfinder vs T2i’s 95%, .87 magnification pentamirror viewfinder
(+) Articulating screen
(+) Wireless flash control
(+) Horizontal electronic level
(+) In camera processing (new RAW processing feature and in camera filter effects)
(+) Top LCD screen
(+) 5.3 fps vs 3.7 fps
(+) Built in adjustable audio level capability in video

60D vs. 7D

(+) Articulating screen
(+) In camera processing (new RAW processing feature and in camera filter effects)
(+) Control over max auto-ISO
(+) Eye-Fi wifi file transfer functions
(+) Built in adjustable audio level capability in video

(-) 9 all cross-type AF points vs 7D’s 19 all cross-type points
(-) Less AF features (such as Zone AF and Point Expansion)
(-) Polycarbonate body vs 7D’s magnesium alloy
(-) 96%, .95 magnification pentaprism viewfinder vs 7D’s 100%, 1.0x magnification pentaprism viewfinder
(-) Transmissive LCD screen on focus screen on 7D
(-) Only horizontal electronic level vs both horizontal and vertical level on 7D
(-) 5.3 fps vs 7D’s 8 fps
(-) No lens microadjustment in 60D
(-) Shutter life of 100,000 vs 7D’s 150,000
(-) Dual DIGIC 4 processors in 7D
(-) 3 custom settings in 7D; 1 custom settings in 60D
(-) No PC Sync in 60D

By comparing these features, it’s easy to see that the 60D fits well in the price point directly between the T2i and 7D, but of course, a large segment of previous 40D and 50D owners hoping for a true successor that isn’t watered down to a certain price point will still undoubtedly be disappointed. It’s easy to see in comparing the 60D to the 7D and also to Nikon’s newest offerings that Canon chose to limit functionality merely so that 60D sales didn’t interfere with the 7D. In fact, if you are not completely entrenched in the Canon camp, I would also suggest looking at the new Nikon D7000. It looks like a spectacular camera for not much more than the 60D. I have not used it nor will I, so I can’t comment on whether it’s a better choice or not.

Even so, the quality of the 60D and new functionality offer enough new aspects that many customers will surely be happy with it. The articulating screen offers a way to attain tough shots that would have previously demanded extra equipment or odd contortions to reach. It also gives a great new avenue for video capture. Eye-fi wireless transfers work well and help out on those lazy days where you just want to set your camera down and have the work of transferring photos be done for you. Much of the in camera post-production comes off as being a little “gimmicky” to me, but having the option to add effects and process photos definitely doesn’t detract from the camera. And many people who don’t do much of their own post-processing after transfer to a computer will probably find the in camera RAW conversion and creative effects to be a nice addition.

To me, it really came down to one major factor though: autofocus. I tend to do a lot of shooting involving fast moving subjects, so autofocus for my photography is key. The T1i and T2i were disappointing in this respect. 9 points with one cross-type in the T1i/T2i is respectable, but I found that I really could only rely on using the center point in AI servo mode to get many speedy subjects in focus. I purchased a 7D later, and was blown away by the accuracy. The options of using extra points for expansion, using autofocus zones, having 19 full cross-type points, superior subject tracking, and even the option for narrowing the points in spot autofocus really opened up new areas of photography for me. I get about 10x the amount of usable shots than I would with the T1i and T2i. The 60D isn’t THAT good, but it is still much better than the T1i/T2i. In fact, just like with almost everything else about the camera, it’s just about right in between the T2i and 7D. Autofocus is fast and accurate, but there are still moments where subjects just move too fast and unfortunately, the 60D doesn’t have the capabilities of the 7D. If you are deciding between the 7D and 60D, this is the area you should really look at, because this is the real difference between the 2 cameras. I chose the 7D, and then decided to give the 60D a try just to see if I made the right decision. I am happy with my 7D, but the 60D was no slouch.

In my honest opinion, I think this is a huge sticking point for 40D and 50D owners though. The autofocus system needed to be updated from the previous 2 XXD editions. It has the same 9 cross-type points as the 40D and 50D did before it, and same functionality. To be a good upgrade for previous XXD users, it didn’t have to be as good or better than the 7D, but it would have been nice for it to be better than the previous 2 models. Removing the magnesium alloy body and lens microadjustment really comes across as a slap in the face to some users who valued those aspects. I have to say that the body is much lighter, doesn’t feel significantly less sturdy (even though it probably is less sturdy), and I’ve never needed to use lens microadjustment though, so I’m not overly upset about those aspects. I am not thrilled about the “non-update” of the autofocus system though.

Now that I have handled and used all 3 cameras currently in Canon’s mid-range lineup, I can definitively say that they are all stellar cameras, but just made for different segments of the market. The T2i is an amazing starter camera and takes great photos for those who want to save a little extra money by going without some of the features they might not use. It might be the best budget option for those who don’t take many action shots. For an extra few hundred dollars, the 60D adds some intriguing new features and seems to be aimed at the people who want a slightly higher-end camera than the T2i, but aren’t ready to shell out the money for the 7D. It’s a great compromise, and to me, the main thing you are missing out on is superior autofocus capabilities. The 7D is more aimed towards the pro-sumer market who want/need a faster autofocus and overall faster, more rugged camera. It’s hard to go wrong with any of them, but the 60D offers a great blend of features from both the T2i and 7D along with new features of it’s own for a price that won’t completely break the bank. It seems to have accomplished everything it needed to do, except for one: giving the 40D and 50D owners an option for upgrade aside from the expensive 7D. If the 60D had kept the magnesium alloy body, lens microadjustment, or even just had a slightly better AF system compared to the 50D, I could easily give this camera 5 stars. As it is, I can only give it 4 stars because it’s a wonderful camera for a certain segment of customers looking for a new camera, but completely isolates another loyal customer base looking for their beloved XXD line to continue.

First this camera replaced my original capture the moment kit, which included a Nikon D80 DLSR and a Samsung HD-1010 Digital Video Camera. I sold them both after owning this for a week. They are simply not needed anymore. It’s very nice to be able to go to my kid’s soccer games and not look like I am bringing a production crew. One camera for killer photos and video. I use this camera 70/30 photos/video, and it is just a pleasure to work with.

What I like for photography:
Excellent pictures – Even with the stock 18-135 lens, solid photos, great details, and very very crop-able. Yes this is not an L Lens but it is still very good
Low light performance – The ISO high iso speeds work well when you can’t use a flash, there is still some noise but its manageable, the default setting for upper end iso is 3200, so that tells you how confident Canon is with its camera’s ability to handle noise.
Solid camera (my friend has the 7D, there is a difference when handling them, but not much, all the talk of metal vs. plastic frame I think is overrated)
Very fast focus, yes its not the 32 point next gen autofocus, but in all my tests when not using live view it does just fine transitioning between focus points.
Fast shooting speed almost 6 fps is very good, and thought 3 fps was good. (I also like the 2 settings for shooting speed, normal and high speed)
Built in Wireless flash control. I also bought the 430EX II, and 3 button pushes later I had the speed light firing while it sat off camera behind the subject, and that is very cool
Great Canon Software (I use a Mac, and I love the USB interface software, you can completely control the camera from your computer
Custom Shooting mode – Exact what it sounds like, its nice touch
The flip out rotating screen is very sharp, probably one of the best I’ve seen on a DSLR. I don’t shoot much live view though.
It uses SD, only because I had plenty of SD cards from my last two devices.

What I don’t like photography:
The lock button on the mode selector, it turns changing the shoot mode into a 2 handed operation
The lack of dedicated buttons – I know they had to save space when they added the vari-screen, but I liked having quick one touch access to bracketing on my Nikon
This isn’t a “don’t like” it’s more “I could do without” all the preset modes on the wheel. People who are going to spend $1000+ on a camera most likely don’t need a preset called landscape or portrait. Maybe they were trying to fill the space on the wheel?
Also all this hupla about in camera processing and special effects, it seems a bit gimmicky to me. I have a plenty of Macs with big beautiful screens to do this, heck I could do it with an iPad now if I really wanted to. I can’t see someone trying to color correct on the camera especially since it’s not like you could transmit the edited file directly from the camera, it still has to go through a computer somewhere along the line. These might be useful if my camera came with built-in 3G or something, otherwise not so much.

What I like video:
Video performance is excellent, head over to vimeo.com and look at all the sample footage, it is just astounding. I’ve experimented with the 50/1.8 lens and wow the DoF is crisp in the video. You would need some expensive lens adapters to get these results with a camcorder.
The flip out screen! This is main reason I bought this camera, It never made sense to me how I could shoot proper video without those expensive view finder liveview converter things. Plus I thought they looked silly. Now with this, I hold the camera at just above waist level close to my body with the screen flipped out and up, it makes for stable video and relatively easy manual focus if you want to use it.
Manual controls are also very useful for video, you can control everything from the image to the audio via manual controls

What I don’t like video:
Noise at high ISO – With the stock lens 18-135 IS I do not recommend low light shooting, it will work, but its very noisy – just like photography better lenes with lower F-stops = better output.
Autofocus is a bit slow (I try not use the autofocus when actually recording, I usually shoot video with manual focus, its not that hard when you get the hang of it)

So that’s it, a solid DSLR with a solid video camera built in, I would recommend this camera to people like me, who understand and love photography and also love shooting video. People who can use manual controls but you don’t mind throwing it in program mode for the quick shots and you can’t justify spending the extra money on a 7D. I am very very happy with this camera!

362 of 378 people found the following review helpful.
Why Choose the 60D over the T2i or 7D?
By dojoklo
The three dSLRs in the Canon consumer line-up (60D, 7D, T2i) all share a number of specifications and features, a similar exposure metering system, as well as an image sensor that is very similar, and all with 18 megapixels. Due to this, the image quality and ISO performance of these three cameras will be nearly identical, and all are capable of taking high quality images. So why choose the 60D over the T2i (550D) or the 7D?

-Exterior buttons and controls: Greater ease and control of changing camera settings as you work vs. the T2i. The 60D has nearly every control one needs on the exterior of the camera and it has the rear dial and top LCD display screen that are not on the T2i. Any other controls can be easily accessed with the Q button and menu or in the other menus on the rear LCD monitor. The top buttons of the 60D set only one setting each, so this is less complicated than the multiple-setting buttons of the 7D. Canon has removed the WB button that the 7D and 50D have, but that isn’t a big deal – use the Q Menu. Another change is that the Multi-controller has been moved from the thumb joystick like the 7D and 50D and placed in the middle of the rear Quick-control dial. This doesn’t change how it functions, and should just be a matter of getting used to the difference.

-Menus and custom functions: Greater control over customizing how the camera functions vs. the T2i. The 60D has many more Menu and Custom Function settings than the T2i and nearly as many as the 7D. These settings allow you to customize the operation, function, and controls of the 60D to work how you want them to, including things like exposure increments, peripheral illuminations correction for lenses (fixes dark corners) and customizing which button does what.

-Auto focus systems: The 60D shares a similar autofocus system to the T2i and the previous 50D, with 9 focus points and three auto focusing modes. However the 9 AF points of the 60D are more sensitive than those of the T2i: all are cross-type in the 60D, only the center is cross-type in the T2i. The 60D autofocus system is much less complex than the sophisticated AF system of the 7D with its 19 AF point system and its additional Zone, Spot, and Expansion focus modes – not to mention the custom settings of the 7D which will allow one to customize how the AF system works. However, if you are not an avid sports photographer, a wildlife shooter, or someone who understands, needs, and will use the elaborate features of the 7D AF system, then this shouldn’t dissuade you from the 60D.

-Exposure Metering: The three cameras all share the latest 63-zone exposure metering system and 4 metering modes. That means they will all determine the exposure virtually identically and enable you to take properly exposed photos in most every situation, including difficult back-lit scenes. The size of the areas metered for Partial and Spot metering vary slightly between the cameras, but that isn’t anything critical.

-ISO: Since the 60D shares a very similar sensor with the other two cameras, its ISO sensitivity and performance at high ISO settings is virtually the same. But don’t take my word for it, don’t be swayed by pixel peepers on forums, instead check out the camera sensor tests at dxomark to verify this.

-Continuous Shooting Speed: While the 60D can’t shoot a blazing 8 frames per second like the 7D, it can shoot a respectable 5.3 fps which is generally a more useful rate, and is a higher rate than the T2i rate of 3 fps.

-Size and Weight: The 60D is larger and heavier than the T2i but smaller and lighter than the 7D. It is a very nice size, weight, feel, and design that should be comfortable for most users.

-Construction: The 60 has relatively strong construction of aluminum and polycarbonate. It is better built than the T2i but not as strong as the 7D’s magnesium alloy frame. The 60D also has some amount of weather sealing – more than the T2i, less than the 7D. But for most users, including even those using the camera daily or in travel situations, the construction of the 60D is far more than good enough, strong enough, durable enough, and weather resistant enough.

-Articulating Rear LCD Screen: The 60D is the only current Canon dSLR with this handy feature. This may prove useful for videographers, as well as for setting up compositions while the camera is on a tripod, for macro use, or for using it from unusually low or high vantage points. There is also an electronic level, visible in the viewfinder, rear LCD, or top LCD.

-Viewfinder: The 60D has a large, bright viewfinder with 96% coverage of the actual resulting image, a tiny bit better than the T2i but not quite as nice as the nearly 100% view of the 7D.

-Wireless Flash: Like the 7D, the 60D incorporates wireless flash triggering. It allows you to trigger multiple off camera flashes at different output levels. The T2i does not have this feature.

-Battery: The 60D has a larger batter vs. the T2i, thus allowing longer periods of shooting before having to recharge. The 60D uses the LP-E6 battery like the 7D, which is a nice feature as this battery can often last through a full day of shooting.

-Processor: The 60D shares the same Digic 4 processor as the T2i. The 7D has dual Digic 4 processors. However, for most general or even demanding photography needs, the single processor is more than sufficient.

-Memory Card: The 60D uses the SD memory card like the T2i, not the CF card of the 7D. This doesn’t affect anything except perhaps your collection of CF cards.

-Additional processing features: The 60D has added features such as the creative filters (toy camera, miniature tilt-shift effect) and internal file processing capabilities (RAW image processing, image resizing) that the other two cameras do not have. This is not critical as these operations can typically be more easily done in batches on a computer.

-Lack of AF Microadjustment: Many are disappointed that the 60D does not include the ability to micro-adjust the focus so that each lens is completely accurate. However, if you have a focus issue, send your camera and/ or lenses to Canon while under warranty and ask them to calibrate them. The 7D has this feature, the T2i does not.

-Locking Mode Dial: This is a new feature for a Canon dSLR that keeps the Mode dial from accidentally rotating. A nice touch only on the 60D.

-Full HD Video: And of course the 60D has full HD video, just like the other two cameras.

-A Note to Strobists: The 60D does not have a PC sync flash socket to plug in PC sync cords. The 7D has this, the T2i does not.

-Ease of operation: While beginners may find all the buttons, controls, and menus of any dSLR difficult and confusing at first, the controls and menus of the 60D are all quite intelligently designed and straightforward for the advanced user. If you’d like to get up and running with the 60D quickly and competently be sure to check out a PDF eBook I put together called Your World 60D on the “Picturing Change” blog or the Kindle version here: Your World 60D – The Photographer’s Guide to Operation and Image Creation with the Canon 60D. It describes how to set up the Menu settings and Custom Function settings, and explains how, when, and why to use the settings, controls, and features of the 60D in everyday still photography use, including aperture priority and shutter priority modes. Plus it has information on exposure, composition, using depth of field, and basic video settings. It should help you get the most out of the 60D.

The 60D is an excellent camera for those wanting to upgrade from the Rebel line, for the advanced dSLR user who wishes to take advantage of all the features and customizations options of the 60D, and for the first-time dSLR buyer who is knowledgeable of camera controls or eager to learn. Its size, durability, and features will suit those who wish to use it for both general use and for travel, and its image quality and performance is exceptional for a camera at this price.

But it isn’t my first SLR … I have used a Canon Elan IIE for a number of years, and trust me, that camera is no slouch.

But enough about me … the D50 is the real star of the show! I have had the camera (along with the standard lens included with the kit) and so far I am extremely happy. I purchased it just in time to capture some photos of my new neice, and my family swears that the pictures that I was just casually snapping at the hospital look like they are professional portaits. Granted, some of my family members … well, their necks are pretty tan, if you know what I mean, but you get the point. The camera has a slew of modes that are ideally suited to your subject (portraits, action, etc etc), and they do a great job of making all of the fine adjustments that improve the overall quality of the photo for the non-experts. But this camera has varying levels of automation to where you would practically require a photography degree to get your picture. My skills are somewhere in between, but trust me, if you are an absolutely beginner, in 5 minutes you can be taking photos that are 99% of the quality that a pro with a $5000 setup would take. Now you might need to snap a few dozen shots to get just one that is amazing, but that is what is just wonderful about digital cameras. And with a huge, super sharp LCD preview window, you can see in an instant if you have a decent shot, and if not, delete it and try again!

The camera takes the small “big-toenail” SD memory cards, which is a departure from what you will typically see in a digital SLR. I personally like the smaller size; otherwise, I don’t believe there is a significant difference. If you pick up one major point from this review … READ THIS !!!! I initially tried shooting with some SD memory that I had been using in my MP3 player. It worked fine, but if shooting a series of rapid shots, it would take the camera what seemed like a couple of seconds to write to the memory. That is typical with all of the digital SLRs that I have read about … you get maybe a dozen high-speed shots, and then the camera sort of “bogs down”. And most of the time that is fine. But this camera takes advantage of the slightly more expensive “pro” SD memory, which can be written to at extremely high speeds. Because of this, the camera can take an unprecendented number of shots (I believe 137 according to Nikon)!!! Folks, that is amazing, let me tell you. You can just hold the button down and fire away, and capture all of the high-speed action that you can imagine. No more excuses for missing that perfect action shot. Sure, you aren’t going to require this feature very often, but it is nice to have, just in case. And even with normal shots, the high-speed memory seems to work much quicker than normal memory.

The camera can save files in three different size (resolution) levels, three different JPEG quality levels, and the complete uncompressed RAW format. I’ve been shooting using the medium resolution and medium JPEG quality, and the photos look sharper than my old Canon 35mm SLR. You could easily print out 8 x 10 photos and they would look perfect even at the medium quality setting; poster size would look fine at the high quality setting.

The rechargeable battery that is included is simply amazing – I believe they rate it for 2000 shots, and I believe it. It would be VERY diffult to drain this battery in a single day, even with numerous flashes and auto-focusing shots.

The fast auto-focus, very user-friendly menus, flexibility with all Nikon lenses, and near-pro quality at a price that the weekend-photo-warrior consumer can afford, I don’t see how you can go wrong with this camera.

Happy photographing!

MURRAY
This camera feels so much like my old Nikon film camera, it was love from the first moment I held it in my hand. Using a 1 Gig memory card I can now shoot 350+ “fine” quality photos without having to change out ten rolls of film…or pay the processing! And a handy battery recharger quickly restores battery capacity when needed. Even with lots of flash pictures its charge remained strong for very long periods of time. A handy icon appears in the info screen area to let you see at a glance who much power remains.

I bought the D50 for a vacation to the photogenic Southwest, and this camera was more than up to the task. The fast auto-focus, the simplfied auto controls that give quick choices for portrait, landscape and full sun, cloudy, night etc. let me shoot like a pro while it was the Nikon that converted my impulses into reality. Neat.

With the ability to interchange lenses, and a great Nikon Zoom lens to start, I believe this camera proves that it is the optics which are every bit as important as the pixels. My earlier digital camera has suffered sudden retirement.

I have a wide carriage Epson printer and have been printing out some of the images as 12×18 prints. Even with cropping, the images look like they were taken with a medium format camera. Progress!

If you like crisp and detailed images with no hint of digital-itis, this camera is a great choice. I love precisely composing pictures through the lens rather than approximating the cropping with the display screen; but I also benefit from the ability to quickly check that screen to see the results at once. Never could do that with my old SLR without a Polaroid back!

Overall, this camera and lens is a real find and I do not think you can go wrong with it. Its only drawback is a short learning curve to become familiar with the many features and options it includes, and that is not really a complaint. This camera has more tricks than I will ever use!

I scoured magazine and online reviews and the choice came down to the Canon EOS Rebel XT and the Nikon D70.

They are very similar. The EOS is 8.0 MP vs. the D70′s 6.1 MP but for the type of photography I will be doing (max 11×14 prints) that is not a problem. The D70 has quite a few more control features. That and the price difference tipped me towards the Nikon.

Once I made up my mind to buy a Nikon, I compared the D70 to the D50. They are quite similar and in some ways the D50 is superior to the more expensive D70. Besides a more rugged body, the D70 has a few nice features the D50 lacks: a lighted control panel, a front sub-control thumbwheel, depth of field preview, and you can fine-tune white balance. But the D50 has some features over the D70, notable a larger LCD monitor, higher capacity battery, and USB 2.0 high speed support. Every magazine I read raved about the D50 and none of the features it lacked made me willing to pay more for the D70. I purchased the D50 with the Nikkor AF-S DX 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6G Zoom Lens.

After using it for several weeks all I can say is, wow! It is easy to use but I can fiddle with nearly all settings when I want to get creative. Using a digital with almost no shutter lag has spoiled me. I’ve taken many great shots with a Canon PowerShot 1S IS but it’s my backup now. In the D50 I have finally found an affordable digital camera that is as fun to use as my film cameras.

Pros will probably prefer higher-end Nikons but if you like using film SLRs and would like to get into a D-SLR for less than the price of a decent used car, I highly recommend the D50.

June 2006 update: I recently used my D-50 to photograph friends doing a triathlon to raise money for cancer research. It performed flawlessly in all settings and I ended up with many outstanding photos. The triathlon gave me ample opportunities to use the D-50′s “sports” setting and continuous exposure feature to capture athletes swimming, bicycling, and running from a variety of distances. The colors are perfect and I was able to get 5×7 and 8×10 prints on photo paper (from a lab) with hardly a tweak beyond cropping. The D-50 is now my favorite camera. Yes, there are cameras with higher resolution and more features but it is hard to beat the “bang for the buck” factor on the D-50.

One suggestion: like every other camera manual I have ever read, the Nikon manual that comes with the D-50 is accurate and complete but leaves a lot to be desired. Unless you are so experienced that you do not have to read a manual (and I’m not) I highly recommend you invest in a copy “Magic Lantern Guides: Nikon D50″ by Simon Stafford. This book is everything the Nikon manual is not. This Magic Lantern Guide not only thoroughly explains every feature on the D-50 but goes beyond to illustrate how, when, and why you would use a setting or feature. It also throws in tips & tricks that Nikon’s writers wouldn’t include. Highly recommended.

Marvin
I bought an E450 body from Cameta, as a replacement for an E410, which I accidentally damaged (the replacement body was cheaper than the price Olympus estimated for a repair). I thought I had no interest in the additional features. I don’t use live view, so the improvement in focusing wasn’t important and I certainly will never use the “art filters”. However, the improved, clearer display of camera settings(f stops, shutter speed, ISO, etc.) on the LCD screen IS a significant improvement IMO.

I had a very tight budget and this fit it. I wanted a more serious camera then the e-500 and liked the e-620. I ran across this and remembered how much I like the e-410 and 4** cameras. I took a chance on this because every post I read about these complained about how all it is is a 420 and it was marketed toward the “point and shoot grandma”. I was worried but I know Olympus is a quality company and decided that I really couldnt afford a new camera but bought this anyhow. It was worth every penny. I really liked the e-500 and this is (as it should be) bounds better. Dont let anyone who makes fun of the art filters and whatever put you off. It takes excellent quality pictures(not as excellent as the 620 of coarse) and is every bit as versatile as the others in the Evolt entry dslr series. The size is incredible like the other 4** models. Not big like the 500 but not small either. It isnt pocketable but it is very portable. The liveview isnt great but it is very helpful when the circumstances require it. The live view isnt for action shots. I use it for landscape and flower macro and it works great. If there is a lot of motion use the eye piece. The camera dosent have true IS but switch it to DIS through the art menu and it does a well enough job in underlit rooms and and places you cant take a tripod. Again it isnt true IS so dont expect miracles but it can get you to a slightly slower shutter speed without tons of shake if any at all.I believe it boosts the ISO and uses a faster shutter speed along with some other setting adjustments. I am a tripod person anyhow so I only use DIS occasionaly. The face recognition is ok. The shadow adjustment is ok. It is very rugged and well built. I got it with the 14-42mm and I love it. My other Zuiko lenses from my 500 go well with it. The 35mm macro was made for this camera. I must admit though that because of the 450′s smaller size the 150mm lens takes some use to getting the hang of holding. I like the button layout better than the 500. I love the almost non-existant hand grip. I have long skinny fingers so i can hold it comfortably for long periods of time. It compares to the rest of the Evolt series rather well. It isnt a $1200 camera but it is just as good of a performer. I am surprised by the 3 point auto focus system but I guess for its size they needed to cut a couple corners. I used the 500 for years so i am just used to it. I think the 620 has a 7 point AF setup. It isnt a problem for me. I dont like the placement of the usb cable video out thing but that is minor. The art filters are for some and not for others. I have cameras that I like to take pinholes and pop art with so I use those. I dont think it looks as nice as the real thing anyhow but to each his own. The 620 is great and has many features this dose not(not to mention a 12mp sensor and the tilt LCD screen and the fact that it is around $700 so yeah it will be better). As far as image quality goes the 450 is right up there. I truly think that the colors this camera produces are more true to life than most dslrs are. Olympus makes the best entry level dslrs anyone will ever make.

This is my fifth DSLR (Nikon D50, Olympus E-300, Samsung GX-1S, and Sigma SD14) and I have to say it has the best out-of-camera jpeg image quality of any camera I’ve owned to date. I’ve long liked Olympus’s auto tone correction feature in their software, and now it can be applied in-camera at the time of capture (now called shadow adjustment technology and set by choosing auto gradation in the menu). Tonal range is quite natural, with open rather than too dark or blocked up shadow areas, yet retaining good snap and contrast to make bright, sunny days look bright and sunny. The ESP metering (a multi-segment pattern) has proven quite reliable as has auto white balance. I don’t like having to post-process to get image quality I like, and the E-450 has been very good in this respect.

I’ve also decided that I have no need to replace the 14-42 kit lens that comes with the E-450 any time soon. Based on test reports, I just don’t see any other available lens providing a noticeable image quality improvement for my needs. Almost all my shots are at my favorite 25mm focal length, outdoors in daylight conditions, and I prefer deep depth of field. The kit lens gives me no perceptible geometric distortion, no vignetting, well-controlled flare and chromatic aberrations, and sufficient resolution and contrast as to be indistinguishable from the higher-priced optics (according to Popular Photography’s SQF charts). Plus, its light weight balances well on the little E-450 whereas the more expensive optics would all be somewhat front-heavy.

I downgraded the camera one star for features simply because it would have been nice to have separate buttons for auto-focus and auto-exposure lock. I have set the AEL/AFL button to auto-focus for me, but that leaves metering tied to the shutter release, which wouldn’t be my first choice (though the ESP metering has been so good that it’s a minor quibble). One of the best Olympus features has been their sensor dust reduction system, consistently rated as the most effective currently on the market, and I’ve had no sensor dust issues so far with Olympus DSLR’s.

Sweet
Update: Images up to ISO 51,200 have very acceptable levels of noise (very little). Worst case, I touched up with Dfine 2.0 (noise reduction software) and they look nearly perfect. I experimented with the movie mode. The camera took some very nice looking videos in extremely low light. I don’t know what ISO it used, but it must be hitting ISO 102,400 at times. The video and sound using the internal microphone are really good. I may add an external stereo mic in the future if I shoot video. I should have known, you can’t shoot movies in vertical format — of course — but I did take some that way before I realized that format doesn’t work when you play back on a TV.

I’ve now got a growing collection of images in various conditions and remain extremely pleased with this camera.
—————–

I received my new Nikon D3S only a couple of days ago, and my early testing of this camera has already proven it to be much more than I expected. I took a few dozen test shots in nearly complete darkness and with relatively little noise the shots look like they were taken in fairly bright lighting. I am very impressed. In fact, I would even say they are unbelievable.

I love the new “info” button. I passed over the written material before the camera arrived thinking: who cares. Well, I find it to be an extremely helpful feature. When you press the “info” button, it shows not only the exposure settings, but gives you immediate access to several of the relevant menu options that you can then immediately access and make changes. I find this to be very quick and useful.

The D3S seems a bit bigger than my Nikon D2Xs and other professional bodies I use, but it feels like it’s built absolutely solid. Of course, since the D3S is an FX (full frame) sensor, I have heavier lenses attached and in my bag too. I love the D3S ergonomics and the programmable function and other buttons (programmable AE/AL and Preview button). I hate to fumble with menus in the field (sorry Canon 1ds Mark III and 5D Mark IV and others, but Nikon has you beat here), and the Nikon gives fast access to all the key settings.

I haven’t done extensive image tests yet, but my first impression is the images are superb, color is very accurate and auto focus is very fast and accurate, even in what I’d call “no light.” I have usable images at ISO 102,400 (an amazing seven full stops better than other pro-bodies I use). At this point, I still can’t believe how good images look at ISO 102,400, and images at ISO 51,200 and 25,600 look nearly perfect with either no high ISO NR (noise reduction) or standard NR.

Looking at my images at high magnification and they appear much clearer than even higher megapixel resolution bodies I use. I am now finally convinced beyond any doubt that megapixel is more of a marketing ploy than meaningful for professional photographers and other factors are more important.

As a pro who uses high end digital bodies, this is my first choice (maybe my only choice) for most assignments. I do a fair amount of studio work and thought I might opt for the Nikon D3X or even a Canon body since high ISO is not important, but this camera is so good I may use it for all my photography work in all conditions. If I really need high-end studio shots, I’ll perhaps use my Mamiya with a digital back or even rent a Hasselblad.

Adams
The Nikon D3s is an amazing camera and I love it. The vast majority of people looking at buying this camera are talking about it’s ISO and low light abilities. Even though there is alot more to this camera than it’s amazing new ISO abilities, lets start with it’s most unique feature and major selling point.

How good does it’s ISO get? How about 12,800! The ISO can be pushed up to 102,400 using the Hi ISO settings.

My tests – Nikon D3s combined with the Nikkor 24-70 2.8 Lens.
I tested the camera at 400 ISO, 800 ISO, 1,600 ISO, 3,200 ISO, 6,400 ISO, and 12,800 ISO both inside in low light and outside at night. I have also tested the Hi 3 or 102,400 ISO setting

The ISO settings look really great up through the 3,200 mark. After that one can a little notice grain/noise up to the 12,800 ISO point. I would not hesitate at all running this camera at 1,600 or 3,200 ISO. BTW – Pictures taken at 12,800 are usable. They look really good. But there is a little noise as I said. The 102,400 setting creates all sorts of noise/grain, but that should be expected. So far the pictures I’ve take at the highest setting basically turns this camera into your own “night vision” camera. It can see in very dark surroundings.

More on the D3s

- This camera is rugged. Over the holidays, I had it outside in snow storms, rain, and sub freezing temperatures. It performed flawlessly.
- Info button – New to the D3s and really nice. It displays information such as f-stop, shutter speed, mode, and remaining pictures on monitor/display screen on the back
- Live view – there are 2 setting here. One for a tripod and one for handheld use. Turn this on, and you have a view of what you see through the viewfinder on your back monitor. I personally don’t use this alot, but can see why others would.
- Accurate and fast auto focus using the 24-70 2.8 lens and my 14-24 2.8 lens
- HD Video at 720p
- Amazing 9 fps. Yes, I tested this, and I love it. I shoot motorsports and was hampered by the slower D2Xs as well as the smaller buffer on the D2Xs
- Sensor cleaning – done through the menu system on the back monitor.
- Quiet mode (Which isn’t that much quieter than the default sound)
- 51 point Auto Focus system
- FX metering system (remember if you use a DX lens on this camera, the FX sensor with crop your photo. It appears like a gray box inside the vewfinder cropping your edges)

My Favorite addition (actually useful and I love it) – The Virtual Horizon. This looks like something you would find in the cockpit of an airplane and not a camera, but here it is in the D3s. It is a line that gives the photographer the correct horizon. Why is this so cool? Imagine anything from nature photography in the mountains (like standing on a slope) to photographing motorsports on a banked oval track (that would be me). Here is the function that allows photos to have proper alignment. I could see this function being used both on a tripod and hand held.

*Update on pictures*
- Having spent more time photographing in low light, the 12,800 ISO setting is mind blowing.

- Pictures outside at night – I took pictures of dark lawns, streets, and some holiday lights. Contrast is good as is saturation. There is some grain/noise, but it is uniform and not that bad.
- Pictures in dimly lit rooms – less noise and the colors and saturation are great. These images were sharp too. I toggled between manual mode and program mode to fool with the depth of field and bokeh. The brighter the room, the less the noise/grain. (Again these are ALL situations that would have required a flash with any other camera)
- Pictures of stars – Yup. Stars in the sky. I was actually able to hand hold this camera, aim it in the sky and snap a picture of stars. The picture didn’t look that great, but considering I did it on a whim it was still really neat. (The camera picked up alot of haze in the sky. I think away from the city, the photos would be a lot better)

I’ve now taken well over 1,000 pictures with the D3s and it is easily the best camera I have owned. I am really impressed

—————————
Update on one D3s issue – DPreview forums have reported numerous instances of D3s with a slow focus problem. They say it is a firmware bug. I have NOT had any issues and I am 2,000+ photos into my D3s. That includes many lowlight shoots.

Gaarsoe
I initially started this comment as a reply to someone who asked why anyone would need a camera that goes higher than 12,000 ISO unless you wanted to take pictures in a closet, especially since you can get a much less expensive consumer-level DSLR with more mega pixels and higher resolution video. I decided to post my response here with the hope than someone else might find it to be useful:

For the past couple of years, I have been using a Nikon D80, which from all the reviews I have read competes fairly well with other cameras in this class. I am not a professional photographer, but I enjoy photography enough that the limitations this consumer-level DSLR seems to have became a source of frustration to me.

I recently upgraded to a D3S, and I am absolutely amazed at the difference between the two cameras. The D3S is ten times the camera–and not because of the marginal difference in mega pixels.

It’s not all about being able to take pictures in near darkness either. I take a lot of wildlife pictures with a solid, f 4.5 70-300mm zoom lens (popular because of its good price/performance tradeoff), and with my D80, if I am zoom out much at all, it has to be a bright sunny day to get really good pictures. Cloud cover and even shade results in quite a bit of color noise and a loss of detail, even at ISO settings as low as 400, and I almost always have to shoot with the aperture wide open to mitigate these problems, which, of course, limits my flexibility in terms of depth of field and tends to wash out bright areas. It is also very difficult to stop the motion of things like birds in flight with the low ISO settings that are required to avoid color noise and loss of detail. This is a very frustrating tradeoff to have to make.

With my D80, I have also noticed that the shading gradation of things like fog and shadows in snow is fairly limited–to the point where pictures of things with subtle shading almost always look washed out or have very little detail. The D3S, on the other hand, has an amazing amount of detail no matter what the subject is, no matter how subtle the shading and despite poor lighting conditions. (For the first time ever, I have been able to take pictures of things like fog rolling over a lake and have it show up just the way my eyes see it! No more blending of subtle shades into a single patch of white.)

My D80 also struggles to be consistent with color balance and metering. The D3S is almost always dead on in terms of color balance and metering and is faster and more consistently accurate with its auto focus.

The fact that the D3S’s image sensor does such a great job in low light situations has opened up new possibilities for me. I can even stop down my slow f 4.5 300mm zoom lens significantly at any focal length and get outstanding results, even on a cloudy day. Think about the possibilities this opens up in terms of lens choices. As an amateur, I simply cannot afford the 10K-a-pop, fast professional lenses, but now I can get great pictures with slower, less expensive lenses, and I can actually extend the capabilities of the lenses I have with things like teleconverters and still get good results. In this sense, the D3S is a bargain.

I have mostly mentioned the quality of the pictures this camera takes, and I do not intend to go into its rich feature set and build quality (other comments below have already done this), but I did want to tell you about some of the considerable advantages I have found with the D3S and tell you about the outstanding results that I have been getting. I am amazed at the quality of the pictures this camera takes, and I am thrilled with the way this camera performs! This camera is in an entirely different class than the consumer-level DSLRs I have used in the past.

Since I suppose I am like most others who shop, compare, read, read some more and still can’t decide I hope this might help in your quest for the right camera. Of the cameras I tried, all were very nice and I would be happy with any of them.

I have been looking for a camera that will give me the biggest bang for my buck! I hope to spend more time using my camera as a hobby. Until now have used my point and shoot Canon S3IS digital for kids, family, show choir and sporting events. The Canon S3IS is a great camera; I just want to step up a bit.

I started looking at used Nikon camera bodies as I had an old Nikon 2020 35mm film camera with the 35-70mm & 70-210mm AF lens. I stopped by my local camera shop and found my old lenses would work on the Nikon D50, D70, D80 and D90 bodies. I didn’t find anything used locally or on eBay (too expensive) that I wanted so I looked at the new Nikon D90. Since Canon is the other big player in this field I decided to consider their cameras as well.

Both manufacturers offered what I wanted in a camera; the ability to capture video, able to shoot in low light and had quick and accurate autofocus capabilities. I tried both brands back and forth for several weeks and preferred the Canon T1i. I proceeded to sell my older Nikon equipment to help pay for the Canon T1i and move that direction

While saving for my new purchase and reading about digital SLR cameras I became aware of some of other SLR brands. I found several online reviewers that had good comments about these less popular cameras. Sony, Olympus, etc had nice features but for one reason or another I took them out of contention. Sony, I thought the lenses were too expensive. The Olympus just didn’t click with me.(pun intended) Pentax had very good remarks and had similar capabilities as the Canon T1i. Best of all, the Pentax is considerably cheaper than the Canon.

What helped me to lean towards the Pentax Kx was that I was able to watch some video shots taken with the Nikon, Canon and Pentax on Google. I preferred the Pentax video, it didn’t seem jerky in motion. Still pictures side by side were also very similar in clarity. I also read several reviews comparing the Canon and Pentax side by side with very similar remarks about the performance of both cameras. The biggest positive comment about the Pentax was the exceptional low light pictures it could take. The biggest complaint with the Pentax Kx was a battery issue mentioned by a number of reviewers. I called Pentax and spoke with a technical rep about the battery issue and any other issues Pentax might be having. I was told the battery issue has been taken care of with a firmware update. I must say I was impressed with the tech rep. He was very helpful, took time to discuss his products and said that if I ever had a problem with my Pentax to give them a call as they were here to help me out.
I can use any Pentax lens, new or old on this camera. The lenses I will likely use most is the 55-300mm or the 18-55mm. Both these are included in the kit I purchased. Since vibration reduction is built into the body of the camera instead of the lens, any lens I use will automatically be a vibration reduction lens.

I purchased the Pentax Kx with the 18-55mm and 55-300mm lens package for $653.00 on Amazon. It stated the Pentax camera kit would ship in 1-4 months but I ordered it on Friday and it arrived the following Wednesday, less than a week’s time, not bad!

My thoughts about the camera.
Positives:
-It’s a fairly compact body but not too small. My wife likes the size and it’s not heavy hanging around the neck.
-The menu is fairly straight forward (I haven’t had to pull the book out yet and can still get around easy enough!)
-Takes very good pictures in several of the modes I tried. Very pleased.
-The auto focus is relatively fast and hits dead on at what I am pointing at.
-Some nice filter features are included in the menu options, great to play with but doubt I’ll use them much.
-The low light pictures I’ve taken so far are impressive. When I downloaded pictures they were very clean, without any or very little noise even set at the high ISO setting!
-Used the batteries that are included and absolutely no problems.
-Lenses seem a bit light but balance well on the camera and focus smoothly.

Negatives:
-The shutter action could be quieter. This is my biggest complaint. It’s not like everyone will turn around everytime you take a picture but I’d rather not hear it!
-The dust reduction feature rattles inside when you turn the camera to its side but I read that was normal as was mentioned by a reviewer. Otherwise I would have thought something was loose inside.
-I liked the view finder of the Canon. I think the information inside is a bit larger.
-The Pentax does not have auto focus points that light up when looking through the view finder but to me that doesn’t make any difference. As I said when I pointed at what I intended to point at, it focused right on it, so this to me is a mute point.
- It seems a bit slow when first reviewing my picture after each shot but I think that is due to the cheap memory card I’m using. I’ll get another one tonight and expect it to correct the slow process. If it doesn’t, I’ll update this review and mention it! Otherwise, assume it was taken care of with a faster card.

Overall Impressions:
Would I say it feels quite as solid as the Canon? No, but I really like the Canon! However, I am still very impressed with the Pentax Kx. The Pentax isn’t quite as thick or wide and I think the size might be most of the difference. You know you’re shooting a SLR and my wife likes it! For the price, I figure I saved close to $400 over the Canon with similar lenses. If you want a Nikon or a Canon I’m sure you will be perfectly happy. If you decide to purchase the Pentax you won’t be disappointed in this camera either. It’s not the big name of Nikon or Canon but I bet you’ll start to see more of Pentax with what all they offer and at the price point it is offered for! My budget was limited to $1600.00 but of course I was hoping to spend less. That’s a lot of money to spend on a camera and I could have bought up to a higher level camera which I considered but I am comfortable this camera will give me what I’m looking for and saved me quite a bit in the process. I added a few pictures on flickr that were taken with this camera to give you an idea of the photo quality. Remember, I’m not a pro, I just enjoy taking pictures. Go to flickr and search for scubaguy4409

Tips to consider:
I suggest when buying online you check the retailer thoroughly. I searched several sellers on both Google and Bing and found prices from $400.00 to $900+for a Pentax Kx camera kit. The two low priced sellers I checked on had horrid reviews about shipping and more importantly when I called to ask about their camera packages they were very short with me on the phone. I don’t like to spend anymore than the next guy but i figured if I had a problem with my purchase I would be %$#% out of luck with this guy!

Being loyal to Canon and loving Nikon DSLRs, I just gave this new camera the chance and think its going to change the top list for the first time.

So long, it has been a fight between Canon and Nikon, but now PENTAX got ready to go for it.

My decision was made taking into account the price for what you get, and the rivals where Canon Xti and Xsi and Nikon D5000 and D3000, but think this PENTAX kit is a real rival if not better in many features (my case, fps is an issue for my action pictures) and the price of course.

Go ahead for it and do not let others make you worry about this choice!

March 10th 2010

Just an update:

So far, my camera is doing great!

Some people complained about the AA batteries, so I wanted to state that my camera has not shown any trouble with batteries, maybe because its software is the last version, but aside of that, I just found it works great with Sony AA CYCLE ENERGY batteries: Sony Cycle Energy AA Ni-MH Rechargeable Batteries (4-Pack)

When buying, take also into account that the filter for lens 18-55 is a 52mm and the one for the 55-300 is a 58mm.

The bag I am using for this camera, both lenses, an aditional fisheye, batteries, and a couple of things more is the Lowepro Adventura 170, which is good on quality, space, and price: Lowepro Adventura 170 Camera Case (Black)

Bush
Don’t let other brand loyalists sway you away from Pentax. You can buy EXCELLENT vintage lenses for these cameras. Manual focus is truly where it is at, at least for me. If you do not agree, Pentax has plenty of new AF lenses to suit anyone. However, excellent manual focus optics are easy enough to try for much less money than newer lenses of any brand. Nobody….. and I do mean NOBODY else offers the total lens compatibility of millions of vintage lenses available only to Pentax users. This particular camera is one hell of a buy. I had the money to buy a D5000 or D90 if that is what I wanted. When it comes to Image Quality, I feel I bought every bit is much camera without sacrificing any features that were important to me. This camera takes beautiful pictures and I have only scratched the surface of its abilities. The two lens package (18-55 and 55-300) was an unbelievable deal at $643. Amazon delivered the camera WAY ahead of the crazy shipment date they list. Do not hesitate. If you are considering this package, pull the trigger. Do a keyword search to find online Pentax Forums if you need more information about Pentax products.

Senn
I purchased this photo frame from a different retailer in December at a fairly inexpensive price (hence the 2 stars). Setup seemed straightforward at first. The options allowed either clock/calendar OR photos to be displayed, unlike some HP frames which allow photos to be displayed simultaneously next to the calendar/clock. The angle of the stand is not adjustable. Also note, there is no remote or touchscreen capabilites, so all functions must be accessed from rear buttons.

I placed it on top of a 60″ high media cabinet, but the photos were not viewable standing up or seated. The viewing angles are severely distorted outside of a sweet spot of roughly 45 degrees vertical up and maybe 25 degrees down. So if you want the photos to appear clear when you are standing and seated, this frame should be placed no higher than 3 feet. This definitely is not the same viewsonic quality I remember fondly from their computer monitors in the 90s.

After playing with the frame for 1/2 hour, I turned it off. One Saturday a couple weeks after I set it up, I noticed that it mysteriously turned itself on in the late afternoon. I thought maybe I had accidentally set up an auto-on feature. I tried to access the menu using the rear buttons, but all buttons (including power) were non responsive. I unplugged the unit for a few days, removed the SD card, but still can’t access any of the menu functions.

I asked Viewsonic for an RMA. I will update this post when I get a response, and if I get a replacement unit.

UPDATE: After several weeks, I’ve contacted Viewsonic multiple times via email and phone. I have a case number but no RMA. Their response is “someone will call me back to troubleshoot.” AVOID THIS PHOTO FRAME, and all other viewsonic products. Not only was their product defective, they do not honor the warranty. Zero stars.

UPDATE 4/4: I received a replacement unit under warranty. So far so good. So I’m upgrading to 3 stars. Note: Don’t even bother with email for warranty service; just call.

14 of 15 people found the following review helpful.
Great gift with high resolution photo display!
By jjceo
This was purchased to be a gift for my wife’s parents to hold about 1600 photos of all the kids, grandkids, and great grandkids from over the years. The eight inch screen is an ideal size for a desk or a countertop and the 800 by 600 DPI resolution creates a great photo display that is high resolution and clear. The brightness is very good and is it adjustable if you want to turn it down. The contrast ratio is 400:1 and the photos I displayed are just perfect.

We used the SD slot and inserted an 8 GB card and the photos were all JPEG format. I just plugged in the card and it started running automatically. The unit was well made and it features a one year warranty.

The frame was easy to set up without reading the instructions. It comes with a power adapter and a metal pole stand set to the proper viewing angle. The unit has an SD card slot as well as a USB memory card port. The back of the frame has a power on button that also serves as a home button. The bottom button is the menu button and it lets you setup the photos, calendar/clock settings and the system settings.

The photo selection lets you set the photo display size, display time, transition effect and the mode of displaying the photos like show in order or random. You can also rotate photos, zoom, crop or stretch, and delete photos from the memory cards that are inserted.

The calendar/clock settings allow you to set the date, month, year, clock mode 12/24 hour, and the time. The unit has a very nice display mode where the photo can be displayed on the left side of the screen and the calendar and digital time on the RH side of the screen. This is a very nice effect for an office desk environment.

The system setup lets you set the language of use, and the brightness of the backlighting effect. You can also program power on and power off settings to save power or if this is used in a bedroom just too automatically turn it off for the night. You can even program the auto on/off times to act one time or one of several modes like every day.

The unit can use a USB memory stick but if you get one please get one that is small so it does not extend beyond the side of the frame and ruin the appearance of the unit. The SD card if you use one will not show at all. Make sure that your memory is formatted to FAT or FAT32 format. The maximum memory stick size allowed is 16 GB. There are a few more settings on the device that are disabled and I will not cover them here.

Overall this is a very good fame and well worth the money!

Initially I liked it very much. It has many nice qualities, simple, high resolution, good looking. On closer inspection I noticed that there is a focusing problem, at least with the model I purchased. The photo would come on the screen in almost perfect focus, come in to perfect focus after a few seconds, stay in perfect focus for only a second or two and then go back into almost focused again before changing to another photo. This was a deal breaker for me. In my mind it should be focused and stay in focus. I don’t know if I purchased a defective model. I wonder if anyone has noticed this. I am returning it and trying another brand.
